Woven Waves NS800

Celebrating Community and Faith through Knitting

Over the past year, the churches in North Shields have engaged in a heartfelt and creative initiative to celebrate the NS800 milestone.

Through knitting, a simple yet meaningful activity, members of the community have come together to mark this special occasion.

Fish hold a significant place in North Shields’ history and culture, symbolising both local heritage and spiritual stories. From the biblical tale of Jonah’s encounter with the great fish to the miracles of Jesus feeding thousands and inspiring His disciples with miraculous catches, fish are woven into the fabric of faith and tradition.

Our goal was to create 800 fish as a symbol of unity and celebration. We are proud to share that we have surpassed this target, thanks to the dedication and talent of our local church members. The collection features a variety of beautiful and imaginative creations, each representing a piece of our community’s spirit.

Our Current display is hanging from the ceiling in the Beacon Centre, please do go and take a look. To see up to date images please go to our Facebook page.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to all our knitters for their time, effort, and creativity—especially those who took on the challenge of crafting the giant fish. Your contributions have made this project truly special and memorable for everyone involved.
